Somoud Alliance Calls on International Organizations to Monitor the Situation of Sudanese Nationals in Libya

Nairobi – Mashawir

The Civil Democratic Alliance of the Forces of the Revolution, Somoud, stated that it is following with deep concern the growing reports of harassment campaigns, arrests, detentions, and prosecutions targeting Sudanese refugees and migrants in various parts of Libya. The alliance also expressed concern over inflammatory rhetoric, media content, and social media posts that contribute to fueling negative sentiments against Sudanese people who have fled the war.

In a statement, Somoud noted that the majority of Sudanese currently in Libya were compelled to leave their country in search of safety and protection, escaping the ongoing armed conflict and humanitarian violations. The alliance stressed that any collective measures targeting them, or exposing them to fear, threats, or arbitrary detention, raise serious concerns regarding their humanitarian conditions and fundamental rights.

Somoud called on the Libyan authorities to ensure that any security or legal measures are carried out within the framework of the law and with full respect for human rights, free from discrimination based on nationality or refugee and migrant status.

The alliance also urged the provision of necessary protection for the most vulnerable groups, particularly women, children, and individuals who have fled conflict zones.

Furthermore, Somoud called on international and regional organizations concerned with refugees and human rights to closely monitor the situation of Sudanese nationals in Libya, verify reports of arrests and prosecutions, and work to ensure that those affected receive the legal, humanitarian, and protection assistance they require.

The statement concluded: “Confronting hate speech and discrimination, and safeguarding the dignity and rights of people fleeing war, is a shared responsibility that cannot be delayed, especially in light of the unprecedented humanitarian crisis facing Sudan.”
