War Deepens the Suffering of Persons with Disabilities in Al Jazirah State

Wad Madani – Mashawir

From a facility lacking even the most basic operational requirements in Al Jazirah State, central Sudan, the National Union of Persons with Physical Disabilities organized a consultative session to discuss the conditions of persons with disabilities and the challenges they face in education, employment, mobility, and access to essential services. Participants called for the enforcement of existing laws and the provision of adequate support for this segment of society.

In this context, Manhal Majid, a union member and rickshaw driver, shared her experience as a woman with a disability who has managed to overcome social and economic challenges.

She stressed that the union suffers from limited support and a lack of basic services, emphasizing that persons with disabilities are not seeking charity but rather employment opportunities and the rights guaranteed to them by law.

Hind Suleiman, also a union member, spoke about the difficulties faced by women with disabilities and the barriers preventing their access to education and employment due to the lack of accessible institutions and public facilities. She noted that the union’s headquarters itself is unsuitable for use and lacks the most basic necessities.

For his part, Ezzeldin Al-Abd Al-Sadiq, head of the Cooperative Agricultural Association for Persons with Physical Disabilities, explained that the association, which was established five months ago to create productive opportunities and promote economic development for persons with disabilities, faces challenges related to land access, irrigation, and financing. He called on organizations to support its agricultural projects.

Samer Mohammed, one of those injured during the ongoing conflict, highlighted the challenges facing young persons with disabilities. He noted that their circumstances have become increasingly difficult due to limited rehabilitation opportunities, inadequate support, and the absence of programs that facilitate their integration into the labor market.

Persons with disabilities in Al Jazirah State continue to face mounting challenges that have been exacerbated by the impacts of war and the deteriorating economic situation. Calls are growing for government institutions and humanitarian organizations to enforce relevant laws and create an environment that guarantees a dignified life and meaningful participation in society for persons with disabilities.
