Teachers’ Strike Expands in Sudan as Escalation Looms in Al Jazirah State

Al Jazirah – Mashawir

The Sudanese Teachers Committee in Kassala State has announced the extension of a comprehensive strike in the state’s schools, effective from today (Sunday) until next Thursday.

The decision comes amid an ongoing dispute between teachers and state authorities, with growing complaints over low salaries and delays in the payment of financial entitlements, further worsening the living conditions of education sector employees.

In a statement, the committee said that the strike would continue from June 14 to June 18 and that the resumption of classes would remain contingent upon the fulfillment of teachers’ demands, foremost among them salary adjustments and the payment of all outstanding dues and arrears.

The committee added that teachers’ salaries in Kassala State remain lower than those of their counterparts in several other states, noting that this wage disparity further compounds the challenges facing educators in the state.

Meanwhile, teachers in Al Jazirah State announced on Saturday that they would begin a phased strike starting today (Sunday), which is expected to escalate into a comprehensive open-ended strike beginning on June 28.

The move comes in protest against what teachers describe as the authorities’ failure to respond to their professional and financial demands.
