IOM: Rising Return Rates Reduce Number of Displaced Sudanese
Khartoum – Mashawir
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced on Monday that the number of internally displaced people in Sudan has fallen to 8.8 million, down from the peak of the crisis in January 2025, when the figure exceeded 11.5 million. At the same time, the number of returnees to their areas of origin has risen to 4.4 million people.
In a statement, the organization said that “displacement remains widespread across all 18 states of Sudan, with the Darfur states alone hosting 64 percent of the total displaced population.”
The statement noted that 55 percent of the displaced are children under the age of 18.
Return movements were concentrated mainly in Khartoum State, which received 2.1 million returnees, while Al Jazirah State recorded the return of 1.2 million people.
According to the statement, 83 percent of returnees came back from internal displacement, while 17 percent returned from abroad.
