Sudan Welcomes UN Initiative for Prisoner Exchange with the RSF
Port Sudan – Mashawir
Sudan’s Foreign Minister, Mohieddin Salem, announced on Thursday that the government welcomes an initiative by the UN Special Envoy for Sudan, Pekka Haavisto, aimed at facilitating a prisoner exchange between the Sudanese government and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The Haavisto initiative, which has not yet been officially announced, is considered the first publicly known international effort to promote a prisoner exchange since the conflict erupted in April 2023.
Salem said the government welcomes the envoy’s proposal, which calls for cooperation between the Government of Sudan, the Office of the UN Special Envoy, and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) regarding the exchange of prisoners of war between the Sudanese government and the RSF.
He added that the Sudanese government is committed to safeguarding the lives of its citizens across the country and emphasized its adherence to the relevant legal procedures and international humanitarian standards governing prisoner exchanges.
