The Civil Democratic Alliance of the Forces of the Revolution (Somoud) has issued an urgent appeal to the parties to the armed conflict in Sudan, the international community, the United Nations, and humanitarian and human rights organizations to take immediate action to protect civilians and save lives in El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan State.
In a statement, the alliance said that the city is facing an extremely grave humanitarian situation, with civilians bearing the heaviest burden of the ongoing fighting amid severe shortages of basic necessities and growing difficulties in accessing food, clean water, healthcare, and humanitarian protection.
The statement added that the continuation of this situation without urgent intervention threatens the lives of thousands of families and further intensifies the suffering of children, women, and the elderly, who urgently need a humanitarian response that goes beyond statements and condemnations to include immediate and practical measures.
The alliance called for an immediate halt to military operations and attacks against civilians, as well as the declaration of an urgent and comprehensive humanitarian ceasefire in El Obeid to end the suffering and protect civilians. It also demanded the opening of safe humanitarian corridors to ensure the delivery of food, medical, and relief assistance to those affected, while guaranteeing civilian protection and enabling humanitarian organizations to carry out their work.
Somoud further stressed the need to stop targeting civilian areas and infrastructure, fully comply with the principles of international humanitarian law, and allow civilians who wish to leave the city to do so safely and without obstruction.
