WFP Warns of Worsening Catastrophic Hunger Crisis in Sudan

Khartoum – Mashawir

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that any attack on El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan State in Sudan, could dramatically worsen the country’s already catastrophic hunger crisis and trigger a new wave of violence and mass displacement.

Speaking before the WFP Executive Board in Rome yesterday, the Programme’s Representative and Country Director in Sudan called for urgent action to save lives.

The WFP said it continues to provide vital food assistance and cash support to more than 100,000 people in El Obeid.

The agency also noted that it is urgently pre-positioning additional life-saving food supplies in the area to support more than 250,000 people who may be forced to flee the city should the security situation deteriorate significantly.
