The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a strong warning to the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood and its fighters, who it says have been receiving training and support from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), cautioning that further sanctions could be imposed.
Washington is working with its partners to facilitate a humanitarian truce, end external military support to the warring parties—which it says is fueling the violence—ensure unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid, and support a path toward civilian-led governance and lasting peace.
A U.S. State Department official told Asharq Al-Awsat that Sudan can only return to independent civilian rule, preserve its unity, and fulfill the aspirations of its people through peace and stability.
The official also addressed the role of the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood, stating that the U.S. State Department designated the group in March as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) organization. According to the official, the group has used excessive violence against civilians to undermine efforts to resolve the conflict in Sudan and to promote its extremist Islamist ideology.
The official further alleged that many of the group’s fighters, who were trained and supported by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, had carried out mass executions of civilians.
The official warned that the United States would use all available tools to deny the Iranian regime and branches of the Muslim Brotherhood the resources needed to engage in or support terrorism. He added that the designation of Muslim Brotherhood branches in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, and Sudan as terrorist organizations reflects ongoing U.S. efforts to counter the violence and instability attributed to the group’s affiliates, including through additional terrorist designations where appropriate.
