UNICEF: Cholera Outbreak in West Kordofan Threatens the Lives of Children and the Elderly

West Kordofan – Mashawir

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has warned that the cholera outbreak in West Kordofan State poses a growing threat to children and families as health risks associated with the spread of the disease continue to increase.

The organization said it is working in collaboration with Sudan’s Federal Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization (WHO), and humanitarian partners to contain the outbreak through a package of interventions. These include providing safe and clean drinking water, promoting hygiene and public health awareness, delivering essential health services, and implementing vaccination campaigns.

These developments come amid worsening environmental health conditions in several towns and areas across the region due to contaminated water supplies, sewage leakage into water sources, the accumulation of large amounts of garbage and waste, and the remnants of war.

In the same context, Dr. Mahjoub Suleiman, a specialist in epidemic control, said: “The few hospitals and medical centers that are still operating have limited capacity to respond to emergencies of this scale.”
