The spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric, has revealed that 50 metric tonnes of humanitarian aid were destroyed after a relief truck was struck by a drone near Tendelti in Sudan’s White Nile State.
Speaking at a press briefing, Dujarric said, “Our colleagues at the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) have expressed deep regret over a drone attack targeting a truck contracted by the agency near Tendelti.”
He explained that the attack destroyed 50 metric tonnes of humanitarian relief supplies that were being transported to Abu Jubayhah in South Kordofan State.
The truck was carrying 1,000 non-food relief kits, including 3,000 blankets, 2,000 water jerry cans, 1,000 kitchen sets, 3,000 sleeping mats, 2,000 plastic tarpaulins, and 1,000 solar-powered lamps.
“These supplies were intended for some of the most vulnerable conflict-affected communities, but they have now been completely destroyed,” Dujarric added.
Humanitarian aid convoys in Sudan continue to come under repeated attacks despite the country’s escalating humanitarian crisis. An estimated 33.7 million people, including 17.3 million children, are expected to require humanitarian assistance this year, while 825,000 children are at risk of suffering from severe acute malnutrition.
