Sudanese Rights Group Accuses Al-Baraa bin Malik Brigade of Forcibly Recruiting Children

Khartoum – Mashawir

The Sudanese National Human Rights Observatory on Sunday accused the Al-Baraa bin Malik Brigade, an Islamist armed group designated by the United States as a terrorist entity, of continuing to forcibly recruit children from schools.

In a statement, the observatory said it had obtained new video evidence documenting the brigade’s continued recruitment of children and their participation in military training exercises at Green Square in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum.

The organization said these practices constitute a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, calling for urgent action to protect children from involvement in armed conflict.

Sudan has been engulfed in war since 15 April 2023, when fighting erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The United Nations has described the conflict as the world’s largest humanitarian crisis, with nearly 12 million people displaced and around half of Sudan’s population facing severe food insecurity as a result of the ongoing conflict.
