The humanitarian situation for people displaced from El Fasher in North Darfur has worsened after heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms on Wednesday destroyed dozens of shelters in displacement camps in Golo locality, Central Darfur, increasing the needs of affected families.
Volunteer activist Adam Hassan told Mashaweer that the rains completely destroyed around 70 shelters, most of which were housing families displaced from El Fasher.
He said those affected are in urgent need of emergency shelter materials, food assistance, and healthcare services.
Hassan added that conditions in the displacement camps continue to deteriorate as more people flee conflict-affected areas, while host communities and volunteers are struggling to meet the growing humanitarian needs.
Abdullah Hassan, who supervises community kitchens in the displacement camps, called on local, regional, and international organizations to urgently provide humanitarian assistance.
He noted that the increasing daily demand for food requires coordinated efforts to address the needs of displaced families, particularly as the rainy season continues.
Displaced woman Fatima Mahmoud Hassan told Mashaweer about her ordeal, explaining that she fled El Fasher with her five daughters after her husband was killed during the violence in the city.
She said she suffers from an eye condition that requires surgery but has no one to support her or cover the cost of treatment, while enduring extremely difficult humanitarian conditions in the camp.
Volunteers warn that continued rainfall, combined with shortages of shelter, food, and healthcare, could further deepen the humanitarian crisis in the displacement camps in Golo locality and increase the risk of disease outbreaks. They are calling for an urgent humanitarian response to provide essential assistance and protect affected families, particularly women and children.
