More than 500 displaced pupils at Barra Camp in Jebel Si locality, North Darfur State, are forced to attend classes in a single classroom built from simple local materials such as grass and wooden poles. The school suffers from a severe shortage of desks, textbooks, and teaching materials, worsening students’ hardships and threatening the continuity of their education.
The school lacks basic classroom furniture and textbooks, while displaced children continue their studies under extremely difficult conditions despite limited efforts that have helped keep education operating in the area.
Speaking to Mashaweer, pupil Radwan Abakar said the school urgently needs plastic sheeting, a water pump, classroom seating, exercise books, pens, tents, school meals, and school uniforms.
He explained that although some organizations have provided limited educational supplies, the needs remain substantial.
Meanwhile, Issa Saleh, a volunteer education activist, told Mashaweer that the conditions under which children are studying fall far below the minimum standards for a safe and effective learning environment.
He called on the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), along with local, regional, and international organizations, to intervene urgently by providing classrooms, school furniture, textbooks, and other essential educational resources to ensure that children can continue their education in more suitable conditions.
