UNHCR Supports Displaced Families in Sudan

Port Sudan – Mashaweer

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has provided emergency cash assistance to 100 internally displaced families in the city of Port Sudan, as part of its efforts to support households most affected by Sudan’s worsening humanitarian crisis.

Displaced resident Hamad Al-Nour told Mashaweer that many families used the assistance to purchase food, cover healthcare expenses, pay rent, keep their children in school, and invest part of the funds in small income-generating activities that helped them begin restoring their livelihoods.

He stressed that the growing needs of displaced people require greater humanitarian efforts, particularly in addressing shelter, food, and medical needs.

Meanwhile, Al-Rashid Mahmoud, a volunteer at displacement shelters in Port Sudan, told Mashaweer that the assistance came at a critical time, as continued waves of displacement have significantly increased humanitarian needs.

He noted that the cash support has helped ease the financial burden on beneficiary families.

Mahmoud added that cash assistance provides families with greater flexibility and dignity, allowing them to determine their own priorities and meet their most urgent needs, thereby strengthening their resilience and helping them regain a measure of stability and hope.
