G7 Calls on UN Security Council to Expand Arms Embargo to Cover All of Sudan

Brussels – Mashaweer

The foreign ministers of the Group of Seven (G7) and the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs on Wednesday urged the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and allied armed groups to halt all actions that could lead to further atrocities or endanger civilians in the Sudanese city of El Obeid.

They also called on all parties, including the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), to cease hostilities, allow humanitarian aid to reach those in need, and engage in peace talks in good faith.

In a joint statement, the G7 foreign ministers expressed support for the United Nations’ efforts to de-escalate the conflict and urged the UN Security Council to expand the existing arms embargo on Darfur to cover the whole of Sudan. They also called on external actors to stop providing military and financial support to the warring parties and pledged to strengthen accountability for violations while supporting Sudan’s unity and democratic aspirations.

The war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, now in its fourth year, has displaced millions of people and devastated large parts of the country.

Humanitarian agencies have repeatedly warned of worsening food insecurity and the continued restrictions on humanitarian access.
