Initiatives Support Displaced Women in Darfur and Strengthen Humanitarian Response

North Darfur – Mashaweer

The Shaddad Camp Emergency Response Room for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in North Darfur has inaugurated a Women’s Center Rehabilitation Project, which included the construction of a multi-purpose hall. The initiative was supported by the North Darfur Emergency Response Rooms Coordination Council and aims to enhance community services while providing a safe space where women can participate in social, educational, and awareness-raising activities within the camp.

The opening ceremony was attended by representatives of the Native Administration, Emergency Response Rooms, the Women’s Sector, and several community leaders, underscoring the importance of supporting local initiatives and strengthening cooperation among community stakeholders to serve displaced populations.

Speaking to Mashaweer, Ahmed Bush, a member of the North Darfur Emergency Response Room, said the project is part of ongoing efforts to support women and strengthen their role in the humanitarian response.

He explained that the new hall will be used to host awareness campaigns, training programs, psychosocial support activities, and community initiatives that promote social cohesion within the camp.

Meanwhile, women’s rights activist Nadia Suleiman told Mashaweer that rehabilitating the Women’s Center is an important step toward creating a safe environment where women can gather, organize activities, build their capacities, and reduce the psychological and social impacts of displacement.

She noted that women in the camp continue to need more initiatives focused on empowerment, psychosocial support, and vocational training.

Suleiman also called on humanitarian organizations to continue supporting women-centered programs that improve their living conditions and strengthen their role in serving their communities.
