Escalating Displacement in El Obeid as WFP Cuts Food Aid by 50% Due to Funding Shortages

El Obeid – Mashaweer

The city of El Obeid in North Kordofan State has become one of Sudan’s main displacement hotspots as people continue to flee ongoing fighting. At the same time, the gap between humanitarian needs and the available response is widening, while the World Food Programme (WFP) warns that it is being forced to reduce food assistance because of insufficient funding.

A representative of the World Food Programme said the agency is now able to provide only 50% of the standard food ration for displaced people after declining international funding forced it to scale back its operations.

The representative warned that if the funding crisis continues, it will further deepen the suffering of hundreds of thousands of people who rely on humanitarian assistance for survival.

Displacement camps reflect the scale of the humanitarian crisis, with hundreds of families lining up for aid distributions, while humanitarian organizations continue distributing mosquito nets to help prevent the spread of diseases during the rainy season.

According to the Humanitarian Aid Commission in North Kordofan State, approximately 1.2 million displaced people are currently in El Obeid. Of these, only 400,000 are receiving food assistance, leaving around 800,000 people without support despite their growing humanitarian needs.
