Measles Outbreak Worsens the Plight of Displaced People in Central Darfur Camps

The Golo Emergency Room in Central Darfur State has warned of suspected measles cases among internally displaced people (IDPs) in the town and surrounding villages.

The emergency room called for an urgent public health intervention to contain the situation and prevent further spread of the disease, particularly in light of the severe humanitarian conditions facing the area.

It explained that the suspected cases require strengthened disease surveillance and epidemiological investigations, as well as the provision of healthcare services and essential medicines. It also stressed the need to support vaccination campaigns to protect children and other vulnerable groups while limiting the spread of infection.

The emergency room urged residents to remain vigilant and seek medical attention at the nearest health facility if measles symptoms appear. It also called on the public to avoid spreading unverified information in order to safeguard the community and support the ongoing health response.

In the same context, local volunteer activist Adam Mohamedein told Mashaweer that any delay in responding to the outbreak could lead to wider transmission of the disease within displacement camps.

He noted that overcrowding and limited healthcare services are increasing the risks, particularly for children.

He added that the area urgently needs specialized medical teams to conduct emergency vaccination campaigns, provide medicines and medical supplies, and intensify public health awareness programs to ensure early detection of cases and reduce the spread of infection.
