Heavy Rains Devastate Sudanese Refugee Camp in Chad

Heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms has caused extensive damage to the Abugadam Refugee Camp in Chad’s eastern Ouaddaï Province, destroying approximately 80 shelters, either completely or partially, and damaging several health facilities. The destruction has heightened concerns over a worsening humanitarian and public health situation within the camp.

He said that around 80 families have been left homeless after their shelters were damaged, with the majority of those affected being children, women, older persons, and people with disabilities.
He added that the damage to health facilities raises the risk of a public health emergency, given the urgent need for emergency shelter materials, clean drinking water, and essential medical services.
He renewed his appeal to local, regional, and international humanitarian organizations to intervene swiftly and provide emergency assistance to the affected families.
Sabir Al-Nour, a refugee living in the camp, told Mashaweer that the heavy rains and storms had displaced dozens of families and destroyed their few remaining belongings.
He noted that many families are now spending their nights in the open without adequate shelter to protect them from the continuing rainfall.
