Warnings Over the Risks of Artificial Intelligence in Spreading Disinformation and Hate Speech

A research paper has warned of the growing challenges posed by artificial intelligence technologies, particularly their ability to generate fabricated images, videos, and information that can be used to spread disinformation and fuel conflicts within and between communities.

The warning was presented during an event organized by the Sudanese Electronic Press Association – Northern State Branch in Dongola. The event brought together journalists, media professionals, and individuals interested in media affairs, where researcher Ali Turkman presented a paper examining the responsibility of journalists in confronting misleading content.

Speaking to Mashaweer, Turkman said that “addressing the challenges of artificial intelligence begins with verifying information, relying on credible sources, adhering to professional standards of accuracy, objectivity, and impartiality, and raising public awareness about how to distinguish factual news from fabricated content.”

He added that “hate speech and discrimination pose a direct threat to the social fabric, as they deepen divisions and can transform disagreements into broader societal conflicts.”

Turkman called for promoting a culture of dialogue, respect for diversity, and acceptance of others. He also urged the media to strengthen its role as a bridge between different segments of society by highlighting shared values, promoting tolerance and mutual respect, and avoiding sensationalism, incitement, and exaggerated headlines.
