Volunteer Initiative Improves Access to Safe Drinking Water for Displaced Families in Northern Sudan

Volunteers have implemented an emergency Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) project at the Al-Afad Camp for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Al Dabbah locality, Northern State, as part of ongoing efforts to improve essential services and promote healthier living conditions within the camp.

Speaking to Mashaweer, Insaf Abdullah, a representative of the Sahari Development Organization in Northern State, said the project included the construction of 80 emergency latrines and the installation of four water storage tanks, each with a capacity of 40,000 liters, significantly improving water supply and sanitation services for displaced families.

She explained that the project was implemented with support from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and represents one of the most significant humanitarian interventions in the WASH sector due to its direct impact on living conditions and its role in reducing public health risks within the camp.

Abdullah affirmed that the organization will continue implementing similar humanitarian projects in coordination with partners and relevant authorities.

Meanwhile, Magzoub Mohamed Khair, a volunteer activist in Northern State, told Mashaweer that improving water and sanitation services remains one of the highest humanitarian priorities in displacement centers, particularly as the number of displaced people continues to increase and the rainy season approaches.

He noted that such interventions help reduce the spread of waterborne diseases while creating a safer and healthier environment for families living in the camp. He also called for continued support to expand these projects and meet growing humanitarian needs.
