Campaign Launched to Combat Cholera in Areas Hosting Sudanese Refugees and Displaced People

The East Darfur Basic Emergency Room continues to implement a public awareness campaign to combat the cholera outbreak in a refugee camp and surrounding host community areas, as part of ongoing efforts to curb the spread of the disease and promote public health awareness.

On the first day, the campaign focused on environmental sanitation activities inside the camp. The second day featured a training workshop for community leaders, while the third day included a workshop for women’s groups and female heads of households to strengthen their role in disseminating health awareness messages within the community.

The fourth day’s activities included direct community awareness campaigns, as well as the distribution of educational materials on water safety, the importance of handwashing, and preventive health practices to reduce the transmission of cholera.

Al-Sadiq Hamdan, a member of the East Darfur Emergency Room, told Mashaweer that the campaign was launched in response to the increasing health risks during the rainy season and focuses on prevention as the first line of defense against cholera.

He noted that involving community leaders and women in awareness activities helps expand the reach of public health messages and strengthens the community’s response.

He added that the campaign also aims to foster solidarity and cooperation between refugees and the host community, supporting joint efforts to protect public health and reduce the spread of disease outbreaks.
