Residents of West Kordofan Go Hungry, Surviving on Animal Feed Known as “Ambaz”

West Kordofan – Mashaweer

The worsening living conditions in West Kordofan State, driven by severe shortages of basic commodities and unprecedented price increases, have forced residents in several areas of the state to consume ambaz, a by-product normally used as animal feed, in order to survive.

Activists in the affected areas said that “some families are forced to search for ambaz from owners of oil presses, then grind and prepare it as food.”

They added that “children are relying on meals made from peanut-processing waste after the oil has been extracted, locally known as ambaz. This is a solid residue that hungry people often have to mix with some water to soften it until it becomes easier to chew and swallow.”

The activists reported that “a large number of children between six months and two years old are suffering from malnutrition.”
