Khartoum Without Community Kitchens as Hunger Ravages Displaced People

Khartoum – Mashaweer

All charitable community kitchens, known locally as “Taqayas,” operating in the South Belt area of Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, have completely suspended their activities, resulting in a severe humanitarian crisis threatening the lives of tens of thousands of families and displaced people.

A member of the South Belt Emergency Committees said that “the suspension came after the army regained control of the area, coupled with the interruption of external funding and grants provided to organizations such as Sadaqat, Hazerin, and Nidaa, which had been responsible for providing meals to around 50,000 families.”

He noted that “the crisis has worsened significantly as Hazerin shifted its operations to the Al-Afada camp, while large numbers of displaced people fleeing El Fasher and the Kordofan states have arrived in the South Belt area, leaving hundreds without shelter or food.” He described the current situation as “catastrophic.”

He further confirmed that the South Belt is currently experiencing a sharp wave of inflation, with the prices of basic commodities increasing by more than 100 percent, amid a complete absence of relief assistance. He called on humanitarian organizations to take urgent action to provide assistance and prevent further deterioration of the situation.
