UN Calls for Release of Aid Workers Detained in Sudan

The United Nations today (Monday) called for the release of humanitarian workers detained by armed groups in Sudan.

The call comes as the world marks the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, observed by the United Nations to help uncover the truth about people who have been forcibly disappeared and to seek justice for their families. The day is commemorated annually on August 30.

In a statement, UN Resident Coordinator in Sudan Denise Brown said: “The detention of humanitarian workers by armed groups is unacceptable. They must be released immediately and unconditionally.”

Brown did not specify which groups are detaining the aid workers, nor did she provide details on their number or whereabouts.

She revealed that the detention of humanitarian workers has been increasing, often without explanation or respect for their rights, putting their lives at risk and disrupting relief operations at a time when millions of people are in urgent need of assistance.

She called on all parties to respect international humanitarian law, protect humanitarian workers, supplies and equipment, and allow humanitarian organizations to operate safely and independently.
