The escalation of fighting and deterioration of security conditions in Sudan’s Blue Nile State have triggered a major wave of displacement. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced today, Sunday, that approximately 100,000 people, 47 percent of them children, were displaced in the southeastern state between January 11 and August 23, 2026.
In a statement, the organization said an estimated 99,277 people, representing 19,497 households, were displaced from various locations across Blue Nile State during the period.
It explained that the number of internally displaced people increased by 66 percent compared with the previous update, rising from 59,742 displaced people recorded on May 21, 2026. The organization noted that nearly half of those displaced are adolescents and children under the age of 18, accounting for 47 percent of the total.
According to the organization, the displaced people came from several areas across the state, including Geissan, which recorded 39,570 displaced people, Kurmuk, with 32,515 people, and Bau, with 27,192 people.
