The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has warned that Sudan’s humanitarian system could collapse within weeks due to funding shortages and growing humanitarian needs resulting from the continuation of military operations and attacks, compounded by the impacts of the rainy season.
IOM Director General Amy Pope said that “the humanitarian system could collapse entirely if new funding is not secured,” amid the intensification of the conflict and rising displacement rates in a country where the war is approaching its fourth year.
In a statement, the organization said that “the coverage of the shared humanitarian supply line it operates is shrinking, despite humanitarian needs remaining at record levels.”
The organization said it needs $15 million to maintain the supply line’s minimum operational capacity for 12 months, allowing it to support 305,000 people. Funding of $27 million would increase its capacity to reach around 570,000 people, while $42 million would enable an expansion of operations to provide immediate assistance to up to one million people.
The organization warned that any “disruption to the shared supply line, which serves as a logistical system for the United Nations and its partners to deliver emergency relief supplies and represents one of the key pillars of the humanitarian response in Sudan, would undermine the ability of more than 100 partners using the system to deliver life-saving assistance.”
It added that rebuilding the system after an interruption would be complex and costly and would require considerable time.
