Funding for the World Food Programme (WFP) operations in Sudan, which is experiencing the world’s largest hunger crisis, has fallen by nearly half this year, according to WFP Acting Executive Director Carl Skau, as the war pushes more people into hunger.
Skau told Reuters that “access to people in need used to be the biggest obstacle for humanitarian workers.”
He added: “We now have access that we are not fully able to utilize because of a lack of funding.”
He explained that “the funding gap needed to sustain current operations is just under $300 million.”
Skau said the WFP is able to reach all residents of Tawila in North Darfur every month, an area that hosts around one million people living in temporary shelters. However, the agency can provide only half of the food ration, enough to sustain people for just two weeks.
He added: “It is not clear how they will actually be able to survive the other two weeks.”
