The acute malnutrition crisis in Kalma Camp in South Darfur State has worsened due to shortages of food and health services.
As a result of these conditions, the humanitarian situation in the camp has become extremely critical and threatens a total collapse.
Meanwhile, Ammar Al-Tahir, a volunteer activist in the displacement camps of South Darfur, told Mashawir that “70 percent of the displaced people are not receiving any food assistance, while only 30 percent receive irregular rations.”
He added that “the search for food has turned into a struggle for survival,” noting that deaths have also been recorded among the displaced population.
The volunteer activist appealed to the United Nations, humanitarian organizations, and the World Food Programme (WFP) to urgently expand their interventions, increase food and health assistance, and ensure that food rations reach all displaced people without exception.
For his part, Haroun Abdullah, a displaced resident of the camp, told Mashawir that “the hunger crisis is threatening the lives of thousands of displaced people. If there is no urgent intervention, children and elderly people will face death.”
He pointed out that “the majority no longer have money to obtain food and medicine after exhausting their savings more than three months ago.”
Kalma Camp is one of the largest displacement camps in Darfur, hosting hundreds of thousands of people who were displaced following the outbreak of conflict in the region in 2003. Their suffering has worsened since the outbreak of war in Sudan in April 2023.
