Sudanese Mark International Day of Peace in Kampala

Sudanese volunteers will mark the International Day of Peace in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, next Monday, in an initiative organized by the Salamedia Centre as part of celebrations of the International Day of Peace, held this year under the theme: “Invest in Peace: For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day.”

The event seeks to promote discussion on peace and the role of the media and communities in addressing the impact of conflicts and contributing to building a more just and secure future.

The centre has invited people interested in peace, media, and community issues to participate in a meeting to discuss ways to strengthen the role of local communities and media outlets in addressing the effects of conflicts and supporting initiatives aimed at promoting a culture of peace and coexistence.

In this context, peace researcher and specialist Hassan Ali Youssef told Mashawir that “marking the International Day of Peace provides an opportunity to reaffirm the importance of investing in peace as a shared responsibility.”

He noted that “local communities and the media can play important roles in mitigating the effects of conflicts and promoting dialogue among different parties and social groups.”

He added that “the role of the media during times of conflict is not limited to reporting events; it can also contribute to presenting narratives that support coexistence, highlighting community initiatives, creating spaces for dialogue, and raising awareness of the dangers of hate speech and incitement.”

He pointed out that “peacebuilding requires sustained efforts that go beyond addressing manifestations of violence to include tackling the root causes of conflicts and promoting justice and community participation.”

He called for “greater investment in local initiatives led by young people, women, and communities affected by conflict.”
