Environmental Crisis Threatens Livestock and Agriculture in Sudan

Gedaref – Mashawir

The Umm Shuraiha Reserved Forest, covering an area of approximately 55,000 feddans, is suffering from a severe decline in vegetation cover due to attacks on and the cutting of trees.

The indiscriminate cutting of trees has had serious environmental and social consequences for local communities and livestock owners.

The loss of vegetation cover has led to a lack of shaded areas and a decline in natural grazing lands, resulting in ongoing disputes and tensions between pastoralists and farmers due to overlapping livestock migration routes.

From a climate perspective, environmental degradation has contributed to reduced rainfall and increasingly irregular rainfall patterns, alongside increased activity of strong winds that have caused significant damage to numerous villages and homes.
