Sudan’s Ministry of Health’s Rainy Season Emergency Committee has reported that at least 21 areas have been affected by heavy rains and flash floods.
The IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC) expects Sudan to experience above-average rainfall this year, increasing the risk of waterborne disease outbreaks amid widespread damage to the country’s healthcare system due to ongoing conflict.
In a statement, the committee revealed that 14 localities and 21 areas in the states of Gedaref, Al Jazirah, River Nile, and Central Darfur have been impacted by heavy rainfall and flooding.
The committee also reported that 133 families were affected by rains and floods between July 30 and August 1.
Khalid Al-Jamari, head of the technical committee for rainy season emergencies, said the committee held a meeting to discuss recent developments in the rainy season, state-level preparedness, and coordination between government sectors, partners, and the community.
He added that the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health, Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim, requested the committee to prepare a detailed report on preparedness levels, available resources, and existing gaps.
