Volker Türk Expresses Shock Over Heartbreaking Stories in Sudanese Displacement Camps

Follow-ups - Mashaweer

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, expressed his profound shock at the heartbreaking stories he heard in displacement camps in the Northern State. He specifically highlighted the suffering of families forced into repeated displacement fleeing more than once alongside a lack of basic necessities, the absence of essential living requirements, and the weak support provided to persons with disabilities and survivors of sexual violence.

Türk and his accompanying delegation visited a camp in the Al-Affad area of the Northern State, which houses internally displaced persons (IDPs) from the Darfur and Kordofan regions, and the city of El Fasher in particular. He met with a large number of displaced people and reviewed the scale of efforts and services provided to them by the government.

The Sudanese Acting Foreign Minister, Mohieddin Salem, stated that the High Commissioner’s visit “places him face-to-face with the reality of the humanitarian tragedy and the bloody methods practiced by militias against civilians on the ground.”

Salem considered Türk’s recent description of the conflict as a “proxy war for resources” to be a significant shift in the international perspective, moving away from narratives that attempt to oversimplify the conflict as merely a personal struggle between two generals.
