Protesters Expand Shutdown of Government Institutions and Offices in Eastern Sudan

Eastern Sudan - Mashaweer

Protesters have closed the offices of the Sudanese Standards and Metrology Organization (SSMO) at the Southern Port, “Damadama,” and the Northern Port, as well as the state and federal headquarters in the Al-Matar neighborhood. This escalation follows the failure of a previous meeting to reach an agreement to end the protests.

According to representatives of the protesters, the shutdown is a demonstration against the failure to implement employment decisions issued back in 2022. They emphasized that the lack of response prompted them to disrupt most of the organization’s offices in Port Sudan.

The scope of the shutdown expanded to include the Southern and Northern ports, which account for the largest share of the SSMO’s revenue; the Southern Port alone represents approximately 60% of total income.

As a result of these developments, nearly 90% of the organization’s activities have been paralyzed, with the exception of the Suakin and Oseif offices and a limited number of other units.
