The UN Under-Secretary-General and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Tom Fletcher, has confirmed that the humanitarian crisis in Sudan has entered a stage he described as “catastrophic and unprecedented.”

Fletcher held the international community responsible for ensuring the urgent delivery of life-saving aid to millions of civilians affected by a war that has lasted more than a thousand days.

Speaking at an international event in Washington, D.C.—aimed at mobilizing new funding contributions for the UN-led humanitarian response in Sudan, Fletcher stated, “The conflict has left behind widespread famine, grave violations, and destruction that has touched the lives of millions.” He specifically noted that women and girls are suffering from horrific sexual violence.

Fletcher announced that Sudan constitutes the most critical element of the UN Humanitarian Plan for 2026, which was launched last December and aims to save 87 million people worldwide.

He explained that the United Nations intends to reach more than 14 million people inside Sudan during the current year, providing vital support including food, medicine, water, and sanitation services, in addition to protecting women and the most vulnerable groups.
