The United Nations International Organization for Migration (IOM) revealed that 3.6 million people have returned to their homes, leading to a 21 percent decrease in the number of displaced persons compared to the highest recorded figure.
The organization said in a report that 3,682,861 people returned to their homes in 2,690 locations across 70 localities in 9 states. It noted that 83 percent returned from internal displacement while the rest came from outside Sudan.
It indicated that Khartoum State received 44 percent of the returnees, totaling 1,605,561 individuals, followed by Gezira State, where 1,097,175 individuals returned, while 225,623 citizens returned to Sennar.
The report stated that 89 percent of the returnees went back due to the improved security situation, while 8 percent reported that the reason for their return was the depletion of resources in displacement areas.
It explained that 93 percent of the returnees resided in their original homes, even though 88 percent reported that their houses were damaged and 10 percent reported the complete destruction of their dwellings. Meanwhile, 4 percent are staying with host families, and the rest are in rented houses and shelter centers.
