The Adre border crossing between Sudan and Chad witnessed unprecedented congestion in the movement of goods today, Wednesday, before security forces intervened to disperse transport drivers by force, leading to several injuries, according to sources and eyewitnesses.
The state of chaos followed the opening of the crossing for limited hours before it was closed again.
According to eyewitnesses and drivers working in the transport of goods between the two sides of the border, the crossing saw major crowding after the announcement of its opening. Dozens of merchants and owners of transport vehicles and horse-drawn carts loaded with goods flocked there in hopes of crossing during the limited period allowed.
Sources stated that tensions escalated in the vicinity of the crossing shortly after movement began, when Chadian security forces deployed at the site attempted to disperse those gathered and force them to retreat following the decision to re-close the crossing, which led to altercations between some drivers and security personnel.
