Bread prices in Sudan have surged, increasing by 50 Sudanese pounds per loaf, with authorities officially setting the price of four loaves at 1,000 Sudanese pounds.
The spokesperson for the Sudanese Bakers’ Union, Issam El-Din Akkasha, attributed this increase to the country’s exposure to rising global fuel prices due to the Iranian conflict.
He stated that “these conditions have led to higher domestic transportation costs, which in turn have increased the price of flour and other bread production inputs, ultimately pushing bread prices upward.”
He added, “Amid the ongoing conflict in the region, we fear further increases in costs that could force bakery owners to sell three loaves for 1,000 Sudanese pounds.”
