Drought and Hunger Drive Residents of South Darfur to Flee Their Homes

Darfur – Mashawir

The General Coordination of Displaced Persons and Refugee Camps in Sudan said on Friday that the failure of the agricultural season, the looming threat of hunger and other consequences of the war are forcing residents of Marshing Locality in South Darfur State to flee towards Tawila in North Darfur State.

According to United Nations reports, approximately 800,000 displaced people have sought refuge in Tawila, located about 60 kilometres west of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur. They are living in eight camps in the area, which is under the control of the Sudan Liberation Movement led by Abdel Wahid al-Nur.

In a statement issued on Friday, the General Coordination of Displaced Persons and Refugee Camps said that “thousands of residents of Marshing Locality are being displaced every day in search of water, food and healthcare services.”

The statement further reported that farmers had harvested no quantities of sorghum or millet this season, the two staple food crops for the majority of the population. This has led to the depletion of food stocks among many households.
