The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) said that Sudanese journalists deserve justice and that every violation must be investigated, with those responsible held accountable, regardless of their identities or affiliations.
It added that the consequences of impunity do not end when a crime is committed. Every attack that goes uninvestigated sends a message to perpetrators that they can repeat their violations without facing consequences.
“We, together with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), reaffirm our solidarity with the Sudanese people and with journalists who continue to report the truth despite the grave risks they face,” UNESCO said.
The two organizations renewed their commitment to protecting the safety of journalists, safeguarding their freedom to carry out their work, and ensuring their right to justice and redress.
