Funding Shortages Threaten to Leave 15 Million Sudanese Homeless Amid Severe Humanitarian Gaps

Omdurman – Mashawir

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Saturday that humanitarian agencies can provide assistance to only around 10 per cent of the 15.4 million Sudanese people in need of emergency shelter and essential household items.

In a joint statement, the two organisations said: “Approximately 15.4 million people urgently need emergency shelter and basic household items. However, funding constraints mean that humanitarian agencies can prioritise assistance for only around 10 per cent of those in need.”

The statement revealed that only 936,000 people had received assistance, leaving a massive gap between growing humanitarian needs and the resources available to address them.

It warned that millions of people forced to flee their homes because of the conflict risk being left without shelter, amid severe funding shortages that threaten to exhaust stocks of emergency shelter materials and other essential supplies.
