Displacement camps across Sudan’s Darfur region continue to experience recurring fires that have left thousands of people displaced, destroyed hundreds of shelters, and damaged makeshift homes, wooden structures, and huts.
On Thursday, a sudden fire broke out at Kaloketing Displacement Camp, located south of Jebel Marra and north of the city of Kass, causing significant material losses to the property and shelters of displaced residents.
In a statement, the Wana Area Emergency Response Room said that “the fire completely destroyed between 17 and 20 homes, leaving dozens of families displaced and depriving them of shelter and essential belongings.”
It added that the flames consumed temporary shelters constructed from locally available materials, along with furniture and the personal belongings of affected families, further worsening the humanitarian situation inside the camp.
The emergency response room called on international and local humanitarian organisations, donors, and philanthropists to intervene urgently and provide essential assistance to those affected. The requested aid includes tents, plastic sheeting, and construction materials, as well as food baskets and drinking water.
