Terrifying Cholera Outbreak in Darfur: Over a Thousand Cases Recorded Within Days

Follow-ups – Mashawir

The General Coordination of Displaced Persons and Refugees in Darfur has reported a sharp increase in cholera cases, with more than 945 people infected over the past three days.

Several areas across the Darfur region are experiencing a cholera outbreak amid dire humanitarian conditions for displaced people, many of whom are suffering from severe shortages of food, medicine, and clean water.

In a statement on the outbreak at Kalma Camp in South Darfur, the coordination reported a cumulative total of 97 cases, including 26 deaths.

The statement also confirmed that Tawila, the largest gathering of displaced people, is witnessing a significant spread of the disease, posing a threat to hundreds of internally displaced persons fleeing violence in El Fasher, Zamzam, Abu Shouk, and Abu Gabra due to the April 2023 war.

It further added that at Kalma Camp, more than 120 cholera patients have been transferred to isolation centers in Nyala. Some have recovered, others remain hospitalized, and several have died.

The statement urged humanitarian organizations working in the health sector—especially the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and other relevant international bodies—to act swiftly before it is too late and prevent this looming health disaster.
