The World Food Programme (WFP) welcomed the decision of Sudanese authorities to keep the Adré border crossing with Chad open until the end of this year, describing it as a vital humanitarian lifeline to the Darfur and Kordofan regions, which are experiencing severe levels of hunger. This decision has enabled the WFP to deliver food assistance to millions of affected people over the past months.
A WFP statement confirmed that reports indicate a dire situation and severe shortages of food supplies in the markets of El Fasher, where people have resorted to eating animal fodder.
The statement pointed out that the biggest challenge facing the programme is access to affected areas, and that WFP is still waiting for approval from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to reach El Fasher.
The statement added that the programme is on track to reach 4 million people this month and has already assisted around 250,000 people in El Fasher through cash transfers.
