The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that Sudan continues to face the world’s largest hunger crisis, as severe funding shortages are limiting humanitarian organizations’ ability to sustain relief operations amid worsening humanitarian conditions across the country due to the ongoing war.
In an updated report, the programme said that approximately 19.5 million people are facing crisis levels of hunger, with some already experiencing catastrophic conditions, while multiple areas remain at risk of famine.
The report noted that “Sudan is facing a severe nutrition crisis,” with an estimated 825,000 children under the age of five expected to suffer from severe acute malnutrition this year.
It also pointed out that disruptions in the Red Sea have delayed critical imports, driving up the prices of food, fuel and fertilizers.
The programme said it has become a lifeline for millions of people, but a significant gap remains between humanitarian needs and available resources. It highlighted the urgent need for US$579 million to fund its operations through October 2026.
The WFP stressed that ending hostilities and ensuring safe, sustained and unhindered humanitarian access are essential to preventing loss of life and protecting livelihoods.
