United Nations: Humanitarian Workers Coordinating Response to the Tragedy in Tarsin Village

Follow-ups – Mashawir

UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said that humanitarian workers are coordinating the response to the devastating landslide that struck the village of Tarsin in South Darfur State after days of heavy rainfall, while an aid team managed to reach the destroyed town carrying relief and medical supplies.

Dujarric, speaking at a press briefing, noted that the number of deaths has not yet been verified, as continuous heavy rains and difficult terrain make it extremely challenging to reach the affected communities.

He explained that teams comprising nearly 12 local and international NGOs and a UN agency have been deployed to the stricken village. Their mission is focused on verifying the number of affected people, assessing urgent needs, and responding accordingly. They brought with them essential supplies for up to 750 people, including medical kits, food support, non-food items, and other basic relief supplies.

He added that mobile health clinics and emergency medical teams have been deployed to provide immediate on-the-ground care. The response is targeting survivors in Tarsin as well as neighboring villages affected by the disaster.

The UN spokesperson further clarified that response efforts are being coordinated with partners mobilized in Golo (Central Darfur) and Tawila (North Darfur).

He emphasized that local communities were the first responders, while humanitarian partners are working to scale up their operations and provide life-saving assistance.
