The Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) warned on Monday that the atrocities committed in the Sudanese city of El Fasher may constitute war crimes and crimes against humanity.
In a statement, the Prosecutor’s Office expressed deep concern over reports from El Fasher describing mass killings, rape, and other serious crimes allegedly committed in the city.
“These atrocities are part of a broader pattern of violence that has gripped the entire Darfur region since April 2023,” the statement said.
It further noted that such acts, if proven, could amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity under the ICC’s Rome Statute.
The Court previously convicted Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-Al-Rahman, known as Ali Kushayb, of multiple crimes — including rape, murder, and torture — committed in Darfur between August 2003 and April 2004.
Referring to that ruling, the Prosecutor’s Office said it should serve as a warning that accountability will follow for such heinous crimes.
The statement reaffirmed that the ICC retains jurisdiction over alleged crimes committed in the ongoing Darfur conflict, and urged individuals to submit evidence through the Court’s secure online portal.
