Khartoum celebrates Eid al-Fitr for the first time after years of war and displacement

Khartoum - Mashaweer

Khartoum celebrated Eid al-Fitr for the first time after years of war, destruction, and displacement, as the Sudanese capital witnesses the beginning of recovery from the conflict.

On the first day of Eid al-Fitr, and after three years of war, Adel and his family celebrated the holiday for the first time inside their city, following a forced absence imposed by the conditions of war.

Signs of joy

Despite the simplicity of the preparations, some signs of joy were present as family members exchanged congratulations and wishes for health and safety, in an attempt to recover what they had lost during the years of displacement.

One family member says that this Eid has a different character, despite the destruction surrounding them.

He pointed out that only one room remains habitable in their house, yet they are hopeful that this return will be the beginning of a more stable life.

Ongoing recovery

According to a report by Al Jazeera, the streets of Khartoum show that the city has begun to regain some of its movement. Public squares have returned to welcoming residents, while children found a limited space for joy on the holiday, after a long interruption due to the security situation.

A number of residents confirmed that there has been a relative improvement in the security situation, which has allowed them to go out and gather, after a period in which such meetings were impossible.

However, these scenes do not obscure a more complex reality, as the situation in Sudan remains fragile, with millions of displaced people continuing to suffer in camps, amidst difficult humanitarian conditions, waiting for the war to come to an end.

Although this Eid is different from previous ones, when Sudan enjoyed security and stability, the return of life to the streets, after they had been battlefields, reflects the beginning of Khartoum’s recovery and its attempt to restore some semblance of tranquility.
