Authorities on Saturday temporarily closed an area in eastern Khartoum and deployed technical teams to search for war remnants, following a shell explosion on Friday evening that caused panic among residents.
The Director of Mine Action, Major General Khaled Hamdan, said that “the authorities have temporarily sealed off the explosion site for several days, while deploying specialized teams from the center to continue clearance operations and ensure the area is free of any other war remnants.”
Landmines have emerged as a renewed and growing threat to civilians, particularly in areas that have witnessed temporary military withdrawals and the gradual return of local residents.
United Nations had previously warned about the spread of unexploded ordnance in Khartoum, reporting the discovery of landmines throughout the city.
