Sudan Loses Millions of Dollars Annually Due to Wasted Animal Hides

Sudan’s Minister of Animal Resources and Fisheries, Ahmed Al-Tijani Al-Mansouri, revealed on Thursday that the country loses annually due to the waste of animal hides. He announced a comprehensive plan to develop the sector and transform it into a value-added export resource.

Speaking at a workshop on preventing the waste of sacrificial animal hides in the capital, Khartoum, Al-Mansouri pointed to significant negligence in handling hides and poor utilization, which has led to major economic losses alongside environmental damage caused by waste.

Al-Mansouri stated that the ministry’s strategic plan includes around 40 projects, with a large portion dedicated to the leather sector. The goal is to transform it from a wasted resource into a strategic export industry by focusing on manufacturing rather than exporting raw materials, establishing specialized markets, and forming partnerships with international expertise firms to market leather products.

He also highlighted coordination with the Ministry of Industry and Trade to rehabilitate meat and livestock product factories and develop the sector, in addition to plans to partner with global fashion houses to maximize added value.
